Captain America – The Winter Soldier felt less of a superhero movie compared to Iron Man or Thor, but I found it no less enjoyable. It has the great visuals and cool action scenes you might expect to see, as well as some nice character moments and few twist and turns along the way.

I will point out some of things in particular about the film that I liked .  Some spoilers ahead, beware! I will warn you again when the plot spoilers appear.

- Captain America vs Modern World

I like the take on the character that Marvel has decided to take. Instead of emphasizing on how Cap is adjusting to modern lifestyle in sense of new technologies and gadgets , they emphasize on the far more interesting aspect of how he is to adjust to modern morality and view points . I also like that they kept Cap representing mostly the “old-fashion” code of morality instead of some national pride idea. Because Cap is so “good” and always tries to do the right thing , he sometimes appears to be the most “boring “character among the other Avengers . But his strong moral principals are used to his advantage in this film . It is interesting to have him as a contrast to the more and more shady morals of today’s world.  It is not so much about adjusting to a new lifestyle for Cap as it is finding something to fight for and believe in . I like that concept .

- Characters

I liked the fact that we got to have cool character’s moments here and there. I liked the collaboration between Cap and Black Widow , also because of their different points of view on the job they need to do .
I was pleasantly surprised to see Nick Fury getting more screen time and to see also his dynamic with the others.
It was nice to see Peggy again. The make-up they did for her to make her age was really good !
The Falcon was also very fun character and he instantly kind of fits into the story ( at least for me ). His got back his costume just too easy … but that’s ok : )
I am also glad they added some small flashback in order to enhance the importance of the friendship between Bucky and Steve and to make it matter more when they face each other.
Just giving these characters those small moments makes them more “humane” . More you care for the characters , more you care for the story and more you enjoy the film . At least that’s how I see it – otherwise it’s just cool special effects .
(Well , the kiss was pure fan service , but I don’t mind that . It was cleverly pulled off . )

- Action scenes

Great action scenes! I didn’t space out or got bored during none of them. Everything was well choreographed and performed, enjoying and thrilling. There was good dose of flying and falling through the air as well , which is something that seems to happen in every Marvel movie … and I love it !

- the Winter Soldier

I have only one complain - I was hoping to see more of the Winter Soldier !!! But I guess Marvel is keeping more for later .
In any case - his costume , his movements , his ice cold look and everything about him was so cool ! Actually , he caught my attention from the first trailer and I went to research him . The fact he is actually Bucky made me three times more interested in him , so he is now one of my new favorite characters. ( and I am set to read more comics about him ) I really want more back story ! but anyway …

I want to mention the music ! The winter soldier score was great ! It was perfect ! You feel the threat he is in that creepy , deadly music . Love it when he appeared the first time ! I loved all his scenes , actually .  Especially when he was facing Cap. Can’t wait to see what’s gonna happen in Captain America 3 !

- the tone of the movie

I was expecting Thor The Dark World to be “darker” film – instead I had lot of fun watching it . No matter the few moments when things went very bad for Thor or his family , the movie was really … funny and entertaining . I felt Captain America’s second film to be less “funny” that Thor 2 and much more serious . Of course there is humor in it as well , but it’s different . Which is great ! The good thing is that Marvel movies manage to have certain similarities in storytelling , but besides that , each character’s film has also it’s own tone and themes to make it unique in a way  . Thor movies are set in more of a fantasy world where no one cares of the science behind what’s going on , thus a less serious tone suits is quite well; Captain America is more grounded and realistic, so it needs its own approach. I really liked the realism and the more serious tone to it .

- the plot’s “twists” ( here are the BIG SPOILERS )

Since the feeling of this film is more like a spy-thriller , some hidden secrets and twists were needed to keep you guessing .  I knew who Bucky is , so no surprise there , but it was still interesting to see how Cap will react to the fact his friend is the Winter Soldier .
As for Nick Fury’s “death” … well , I kept telling myself that they wouldn’t just kill him off and I was happy he showed up again !
The title of the film , though , it’s a little misleading . One might think that it’s the Winter Soldier who is the main “bad guy “ but in fact he is just an instrument of the “bad guys” . Even I was suspecting that something is not going well inside of SHIELD , I wasn’t expecting Hydra to show up again ( maybe I need to read more of the Cap. America comics ;) ) so that was interesting enough for me . In any case , this is an action superhero film – one doesn’t expect some super complicated plot but it’s nice when there is actually a plot to keep you guessing .

The best thing about the plot is that it refers to current themes and issues that our society is discussing. Really makes things more reliable .

- backstory and other Marvel film references :

This movie doesn’t refer to the events in the Avengers so much as Iron Man 3 or Thor 2 did .  Instead of keep referring to the attack of New York , the creators of the second Captain America film , tried to remind the audience of the events that happened in the “First Avenger” . So even if you haven’t seen any Marvel movie until now, you are still able to kind of follow the main story . That’s good if you go to the cinema with someone who has no idea of the previous movies .

Besides that , it’s obvious we are closer to Age of Ultron now , since the first post credit scene seems to refer directly to it. So there is this kind of nice transition from the first Avengers film to Avengers: Age of Ultron – in Iron Man 3 we felt the most the “after effect” from the Battle of New York – it’s only logical , since this was the first film from Phase 2 ; and now with Captain America , it seems we have left that behind and a new big threat is coming .

The only thing is that … we didn’t see any other Avenger in some little cameo this time . Ok , we had Black Widow and Cap both in one film … but still . You might think that when they are in danger, they might contact Tony Stark or at least Hawkeye and not the Falcon who Cap met like 2 times before that …. BUT nevermind that . Hawkeys maybe was on the other side of the planet at the time . Who knows ;) .

There is only one film left – Guardians of the Galaxy before the next Avengers film . Can’t wait to see how all will tie up together ! ^^

I suggest you to go see the movie, no matter if you are a Marvel fan or not . It’s good enough for your money ;) .

Gravity ( movie review )

Year :  2013
Genre : sci-fi , drama , triller
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Main Cast : Sandra Bullock, George Clooney,
 Ed Harris

Gravity is for sure one of the most visually astonishing and trilling movies of the year . That’s all I can say without revealing any spoilers. The story is quite straightforward – it’s about surviving in conditions where no life could exist. More than that is about finding one’s personal will to live and one’s courage to keep fighting for one’s life no matter what .

Now from here on they might be some spoilers! Don’t say I didn’t warn you .

I didn’t find the story very “surprising” but nevertheless the movie was pretty intense. The most interesting aspect is the fact that Gravity is made in a way that makes the viewer feel really involved – as if it’s all happening to him / her.
The 3D helps enhance the feeling of zero gravity and it’s a nice addition to the beautiful visuals of the film. Sandra Bullock’s character was too busy to fight for her life in order to just sit there and admire the view and we can’t really blame her for that – because Space is scary. Beautiful and terrifying ! ( that’s why I love it )

It was an interesting touch to make Sandra’s character to be someone who has “ no life” , who has lost the most precious thing a person can lose – her own daughter and still she finds in herself the will to fight for her live and to not give up .  I expected to see more of George Clooney but in any case he was in the movie just enough.

Probably it was only a matter of time now , with all these new technology , for someone to decide to bring us  “back to space” in a more frightening and realistic way.  It seems that this was the main idea of the creators of the film and I think they did a very good job .
I’ve always loved space and mainly went to see the movie for it’s visuals . I got want I went for and I am pretty happy with the movie.

I suggest you to go see it on a big screen if you haven’t seen it yet – trust me , it just won’t be the same seeing it on your home TV , no matter how HD it is .

Dredd Review

Name : Dredd

Year : 2012
Genre : Action / Sci-Fi
Director: Pete Travis
Main Cast : Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey
Based on : 2000 AD comic book
Warnings : ultra violence, drug use, sex/rape

I recommend it to : sci-fi, visual effects and 3D lovers, geeks, comic book lovers, M gamers, post-apocalyptic stories fans, visual thrill seekers
I do NOT recommend it to : your grandma, children, people with a weak heart or stomach, I wouldn't recommend to go see it as a romantic date or with your parents.

 OFFICIAL TRAILER ( link)

Review : Possibly the coolest thing about Dredd is the refreshing presence of two strong female characters - aspiring-Judge Anderson and violent drug-lord and clan-leader Ma-ma. There is no love story between Anderson and the the legendary Judge of Mega City One - Dredd, which makes the film even more refreshing, since we get a heroine who is more than just a love-interest with a gun. The quality of the visual effects is just stunning and I would recommend this film to all 3D lovers, who can handle their gore well. Another great plus is the booming electronic soundtrack which accompanied the tense action scenes of the film, which also contribute greatly to the visual thrill, which is Dredd.

The story of the film is quite simple - in a future America, Mega City One stretches from Boston to Washington DC and constitutes of a world of violence and criminal rule. Andreson is on her final assessment to become a Judge, some type of law reinforcement agent, who has to power to dispense "judgement" on sight (judgement which most often being death.) So, heavily armed and armored, the angle-faced heroine sets off on her first day with one of the most bad-ass Judges in town - Judge Dredd as her examiner.

Dredd is a rather antisocial character. He makes up for the lack of words with punches. He shakes the ground when he walks and never takes off his helmet. Despite never being able to see his face, Dredd ended up growing on me during the film in the way that a massive, rubber-clad, ultra-violent teddy-bear might.

Anderson is also quite special - a mutant with psychic powers, she could have been the young female Charles Xavier, but regrettably she only remembered to use her powers when it was time to see how much the enemies wanted to rape her. She missed several good opportunities to use her powers in combat or defense, but in the type of stunning 3D action film that Dredd is, story logic doesn't matter too much.

If Anderson was the cute little angle, then Ma-ma was the twisted, dark devil. Former prostitute, turned gang-leader and drug-lord, practically everyone in Peach Trees was her bitch. Broken, used, angry, violent and way beyond redemption, Ma-ma is feared with a good reason. When faced with the two Judges entering her territory, she throws everything at them without a glimpse of remorse.

However Dredd lives up to his reputation and Anderson shows what she's really made of. The sentence is ALWAYS death!

Favorite Scenes : Ma-ma taking SLO-MO in the bath tub, splashing her hands in the water and watching droplets fly in 1% normal speed, all the while glistening like diamonds - a truly beautiful scene!
Favorite Characters : Anderson and Ma-ma - the kick-ass female characters of the year!
Favorite Quote : "The sentence is death," Dredd
What I liked the most : the gorgeous graphics, flawless 3D, the extreme colour correction and the slow-motion footage
What I liked the least : the ultra-violence and the sex/rape scene - a bit too much for my gentle soul
